BOULDER, Colo. — Boulder Municipal Employees Federal Credit Union has thrown a cloud over several square blocks of the city's downtown.

It's a wireless cloud that also has been established around the $52 million CU's main office and will be further expanded in collaboration with local businesses and nonprofit organizations, including soon into downtown Lafayette, the CU said.

In addition to offering a valuable service, the project includes a bit of marketing. Users connecting to it find themselves at Boulder Municipal's hot spot home page–https:/www.bmecu.org/bmehotspot.html–which includes advertising, local information about entertainment and dining and, of course, membership information about the credit union.

The WiFi connection also is secure, the CU said, using routers equipped with client isolation technology, which prevents computers on the network from seeing each other, thus creating a secure connection for each individual computer.

Boulder Municipal joins at least two other credit unions offering free WiFi access in parts of their service area: $1.9 billion Eastman CU in Kingsport, Tenn., and $265 million INOVA FCU in Elkhart, Ind.
