EL PASO, Texas — A media campaign touting the role Texas credit unions play in business lending during a period of economic stress was getting more mileage for the Texas Credit Union League this week as seen in a second favorable editorial appearing in a local newspaper.
The Sunday edition of the El Paso Times featured a guest editorial by Chapter President Imelda Luya calling for Congress to “ease up on credit unions, boost the economy.” The editorial described the power of CU member business lending on an El Paso family which had been turned down by 15 banks in its effort to start a day care business.
After meetings several weeks ago with the editorial board of the Odessa American by a CURIA advocacy team of the Texas league, a similar pro-CU editorial column appeared criticizing banks for blocking CURIA.
The El Paso editorial, said the league, is the result of its state wide editorial drive in support of CURIA with coverage appearing in newspapers and on radio stations in San Antonio, Texarkana, Odessa “and now El Paso” all of which “have spoken out in favor of lifting the cap, which is one component of the proposed legislation.”
