CHARLOTTE, N.C. — State Employees' Credit Union, expressing both heartfelt concern for the victim and cooperation with police, confirmed Wednesday that one of its employees, a female teller at an airport branch remained in serious but stable condition after being shot in the abdomen during a daring armed robbery Tuesday.

"We are all struggling with what happened and working to support our employee, a single parent," said Robert Hall, executive vice president.

The teller was shot as she stood by other tellers who turned over the money to a robber who police said had three other accomplices in a getaway car. Witnesses reported the four driving away after the shooting and throwing money out of the car as the dye packs were exploding.

Hall said "this a first in our history of someone being injured during a robbery" at a SECU branch. SECU, he said, experiences about five robberies a year at its 217 branch network. The Tuesday robbery took place at SECU's Airport Center Parkway Branch about 11:30 a.m.

Hall also pointed out that the robber started off by shooting into the ceiling and thus short circuited many of the procedures that CUs are trained to follow in such situations.
