SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake City marketing executive who formerly served as a campaign advisor to U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, is the new director of communications for the Utah League of Credit Unions.

He is Jim Bennett who has been a consultant for the league and ran his own marketing firm here. He succeeds Robert Ahlander who resigned the job at year-end. Ahlander had long been identified as helping guide various league ad campaigns including "Bob the Credit Union Guy" which has since been licensed to leagues in several locales.

Bennett, apart from running his own firm, the Bennett Group, previously served as director of communications for the City of Sandy and as vice president of sales and marketing for the Tuacahn Center for the Arts in St. George.

Among his first tasks, said Bennett, is an overhaul of the league's Web site due at the end of this week. He said modernization of the Web site has been on the drawing boards for several months. As for the Bob campaign, it has been on "hiatus" awaiting further funding decisions by league management and its board of directors.

Bennett had previously acted as a campaign advisor for Utah politicians Fred Lampropoulos and Ellis Ivory, as well as Sen. Hatch and in 2006, he was campaign manager for the successful Proposition 3 transportation initiative, which provided additional funding for Salt Lake County transit and road projects.
