WALLINGFORD, Conn. — Capping a search that began last October, the Credit Union League of Connecticut has hired Anthony Emerson, chief financial officer of the $175 million Maine Savings FCU, Hampden, as its new president/CEO effective March 17.

“The league board, management and staff are looking forward to working with Tony to serve member credit unions in Connecticut,” said the trade group's chairman, Kathy Chartier, who also is president/CEO of Members CU, Stamford.

Emerson joined Maine Savings in July 2003, after having previously held senior management posts at Penobscot FCU in Old Town.

He has been a director of the Bangor Chapter of the Maine Credit Union League and New England Financial Executives Council. He also has been a speaker at industry groups and is the author of several published articles on member centricity and customer service profitability.

Emerson succeeds Kevin Chandler, an attorney and former Minnesota state senator, who resigned the Connecticut post to join a Minneapolis lobbying firm.

Emerson who said he was notified he got the job on his 41st birthday Feb. 7,

lauded the Connecticut league staff as “truly outstanding” adding that he looks

forward to improving the organization's service menu to CUs, its CUSO and to strengthen the legislative function.

At Maine Savings, Emerson co-founded Business Lending Solution, a CUSO and oversaw the ownership interests of CUSO Mortgage Corp.

He has spoken before college and high school students on financial education and taken part in Maine's Reality Fair for students.

Chartier said Emerson will meet members of the league at the organization's annual Governmental Affairs Conference Feb. 20 in Augusta.

In Maine, John Murphy, president of the Maine Credit Union League, praised Emerson's appointment noting that “during his time with Maine credit unions, Tony Emerson was known for being actively engaged in the credit union movement, participating in a number of league-sponsored events as well as volunteering on league committees. As a frequent attendee of CUNA's GAC, he also helped to promote credit unions with legislators and helped Maine maintain a strong presence with our Congressional delegation.”
