WASHINGTON — Representative Tom Lantos' office is confirming press reports that the California Democrat died on the night of Feb. 10 at Bethesda Naval Medical Center. He was 80 years old.
Lantos was the only member of Congress to have survived the Holocaust. He served most recently as Chairman of the House Financial Affairs Committee and was a CURIA co-sponsor.
Lantos had been first elected to Congress from California's 12 district in 1980 and was in his 14 term, according to his office. In early January, Lantos announced he had been diagnosed with esophageal cancer and that he would not seek reelection.
