PLYMOUTH, Mich. — The two-year-old free tax help service offered by the Michigan Credit Union League to low and moderate income families is getting a big play and response in 2008 with more than $800,000 already returned to Michigan taxpayers.
The $800,000 is already dwarfing the $890,387 in federal returns and $357,758 in Earned Income Tax Credit for the entire tax season last year.
The Michigan League disclosed its updated data for the “Just File It” program coinciding with national “Earned Income Tax Credit Day” proclaimed nationally by the U.S. Treasury and by Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm.
About 140 Michigan credit unions are promoting Just File It! on their Web sites, about 100 more than when the program was first run in 2006. In the first two weeks of 2008, credit unions helped return the $800,000 to over 250 Michigan taxpayers in refunds and credits.
“With so many credit unions participating and greater public awareness of Just File It, we were expecting to see some higher numbers in returns this year,” said league President/CEO David Adams.
