DALLAS — In a revved up advocacy pitch to voice the industry's favored role on subprime mortgages and to address recession fears, the Texas Credit Union League revealed Thursday the launch of a statewide media blitz to gather and publish scores of credit union "success stories."

"We have been handed a unique opportunity to tell the credit union story and if we don't act immediately on this kind of news hook, it will be gone and we will have simply missed the boat," declared Winter Prosapio, TCUL director of communications–advocacy.

Once collected, the CU "True American Success Stories," as the program is being headlined, will be distributed to mainstream media "as well as on blogs, the Internet, and radio talk shows" to name a few outlets, said Prosapio.

The league hopes to gather perhaps 25 stories by a Jan. 30 deadline from participating CUs across the state, said Prosapio, who joined the league last February and is working with Buddy Gill, the league's chief advocacy officer and political strategist.

CUNA officials in Washington applauded the Texas venture as a worthy undertaking noting that a number of leagues have started similar efforts though perhaps not as intense or coordinated so far. We are seeing many examples of those success stories appearing in the national media," said a spokesman pointing to a lengthy New York Daily News article quoting the New York State Credit Union League and headlined, "Old Fashioned Credit Unions Are Gaining Popularity With Homebuyers."
