PORT CHARLOTTE, Fl. — Data collected by CardTrak.com, a Web sitewhich tracks credit card trends, shows that U.S. credit cardissuers increased the amount of fees they charged cardholders 6%last year. That translated into $30 billion the site reported.

Of that $30 billion, the site reported that $18 billion werepenalty fees such as over-limit fees, late payment fees or returnedcheck fees. Late fees accounted for the lion's share of penaltyfees, making up about 70% of the $18 billion figure, the sitesaid.
