PORT CHARLOTTE, Fl. — Data collected by CardTrak.com, a Web site which tracks credit card trends, shows that U.S. credit card issuers increased the amount of fees they charged cardholders 6% last year. That translated into $30 billion the site reported.
Of that $30 billion, the site reported that $18 billion were penalty fees such as over-limit fees, late payment fees or returned check fees. Late fees accounted for the lion's share of penalty fees, making up about 70% of the $18 billion figure, the site said.
