NAPERVILLE, Ill. — The Illinois Credit Union System has donated $5,000 to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, which will recognize the civil rights advocate with a memorial in his honor on the National Mall in Washington.

The foundation (www.mlkmemorial.org) is currently raising $100 million towards the building of the memorial and an expansive center that will feature King's life and accomplishments. To date, the foundation has raised $84 million. The groundbreaking took place on Nov, 13, 2006 and the memorial is scheduled to be completed in 2009.

Collectively, the credit union industry has pledged $1 million towards the King memorial. The African-American Credit Union Coalition has spearheaded a campaign to encourage the movement to donate to the memorial.
