OKLAHOMA CITY — With power being restored slowly and sporadically, most Oklahoma credit unions were back in business Wednesday though many were still operating on a limited basis closing main lobbies, relying on emergency generators and in some cases shuttering branches and relying on drive-ins until the electricity goes back on.

"There were a few small ones that ran with flashlights early in the week but we told those that asked whether to stay open with limited power that for security reasons, they needed to put a 'we're closed' sign on the door, a cell phone number and then shut the doors," said Mick Thompson, the state's banking commissioner.

More than 480,000 homes and businesses across central Oklahoma were without power Wednesday with the Oklahoma Credit Union League closing its offices on Monday but reopening today.

The situation was similar though not as severe in Missouri and Kansas where a number of CUs in the Hutchinson area closed on Monday.

On Tuesday, Tinker FCU of Oklahoma City was reportedly "running intermittently on generator as the power fluctuates" while Tulsa and Bartlesville CUs were renting hotel rooms to house staffers relying on cell phones and wireless connections.

In Missouri, both Northwest Missouri Regional CU Maryville lost power to its main location and branch on Monday and the power was still off Wednesday at District One Highway CU in St. Joseph.
