Washington Redskins Alumni, Money One FCU Team Up for Identity Theft Prevention
LARGO, Md. — Washington Redskins Alumni Dexter Manley added a bit of star power to a recent Money One Federal Credit Union community shred event.
Manley, who has been selected as one of the 70 Greatest Redskins of All Time, made a special guest appearance on Shred Day and was available for photos and autographs. The fun-filled day dedicated to helping the community fight identity theft included music, food, dancing, giveaways and door prizes.

Members, their family and the community were invited to bring and shred financial statements, receipts, invoices and other personal documents. More than 6,000 pounds were shredded by CINTAS Corporation, a shredding specialist based in Columbia, Maryland.
Money One spread the word about the event via a mix of Triple X ESPN radio commercials, links on the Triple X ESPN radio Web site, local newspapers, community flyers, Money One's newsletter, branch flyers and the Money One Web site.
"We were happy to provide this service to our members in an effort to fight identity theft. It was also a fun-filled event to increase awareness of Money One to the community. We will repeat the event in April after the tax filing season due to the overwhelming attendance and positive feedback," said President/CEO Debbie Connors.
Numerica CU Offers Free Shred Event
SPOKANE, Wash. — With more than 5,000 Washington residents become identity theft victims each year, Numerica Credit Union has opened its doors to help arm area residents against it.
During a free shred event, Spokane area residents could not only destroy sensitive documents but also learn how to reduce their likelihood of becoming identity theft victims. Consumers and small businesses were invited to bring sensitive documents to be destroyed by Data Base Secure Records Destruction. Residents were limited to three grocery bags or two file boxes each.
Numerica staffers were also on hand to answer questions and share valuable information about preventing identity theft.
"As a financial institution, we take every measure possible to protect our members' personal information," said Dennis Cutter, president/CEO of Numerica. "We make every effort to educate our members about how important it is that they practice the same safety precautions at home. Offering a free shred event helps us accomplish this."
Anheuser-Busch Employees' CU Launches Software Token Security
ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Anheuser-Busch Employees' Credit Union says it has completed deployment of new multi-factor authentication for users of its online banking service at www.abecu.org.
The $931 million, 95,000-member CU is using the SoundPass system from OHVA Security of Milpitas, Calif.
The system uses a token file created by a Java applet instead of a hardware token. That allows users to save the file on any device they'd like, ranging from their hard drive to a thumb drive or PDA.
Not relying on cookies or easily hacked challenge response questions adds to the security, the company says, and the software meets FFIEC guidelines for authentication protections.
