CHICAGO — The Center for Economic Progress, a leading nonprofit working to improve the economic condition of lower income families, believes that more credit unions and credit union members would benefit from more CU involvement with the VITA program.
VITA stands for the Voluntary Income Tax Assistance program which is administered by the Internal Revenue Service but which many community organizations, including credit unions, have begun to get involved.
"The program has really been around for about 20 years," explained Mary Ruth Herbers, senior director for programs for the National Community Tax Coalition, a nationwide effort to help lower income people through the VITA program. "But its only been in the last few years that organizations around the country, including credit unions, have begun to understand the possibilities the program represents."

By participating in VITA, credit unions are able to both better serve their existing lower income members as well as reach out to the community for new members and Herbers believes that more credit unions around the country could benefit from getting involved. "There is still enough time to be ready for next year's tax time," Herbers said.
