FAIRFAX, Va. — It is back-to-school for Apple Federal Credit Union staffers too as they gear up to mentor students.
Launched last year, Apple FCU's Mentoring Program personally benefited a small group of Fairfax County Public School students.
The Mentoring Program was developed to provide intensive behavioral and academic support with the aim of building responsible and positive relationships with students in first through sixth grade.

A pilot group of five Apple employees–including Eric Amrhein, human resources; Juan Batista, vice president of information technology; Andy Grimm, executive vice president and chief operating officer; Cynthia McAree, vice president of marketing; and Robert L. Sowell Sr., vice president of community relations–volunteered for participation. The volunteers were matched by education partner FCPS with students from Providence Elementary School.
Once mentors completed their extensive training with the FCPS mentoring staff, each began meeting weekly with their assigned student–sessions lasted the duration of the school year. In the spring, to reward their students for all of their hard work, Apple's mentors hosted a special afternoon of bowling.
Plans are underway to expand Apple FCU's involvement for the 2007-08 school year. A Classroom Reading component will be offered to first and second grade students, during which they will practice their reading and comprehension skills. This extension will be staffed by an additional six Apple employees.
