OMAHA, Neb. — In a marketing promotion highlighting "the credit union difference," the $109 million Mutual 1st Federal Credit Union is giving away a $22,000 Mini Cooper sports car this October with one special twist: the winner need not be a member or even sign up for membership.

"This approach is a first for us but we felt it was a unique way to get the public's attention to let them know that Mutual 1st is a different option for their banking needs," said a CU spokeswoman.

The European sports vehicle will be given away in an Oct. 25 drawing a week after the CU's booth appearance during the annual and well-attended "Big O" business vendor show at downtown Omaha's Qwest Convention Center.

The car giveaway is part of the CU's "Think Different Save Big" campaign highlighted by a series of TV ads. Drawing registrations will be accepted at Mutual branches starting next Monday through Oct. 24.

Promotional literature for the drawing stresses, "no purchase is necessary and membership is not required." However, a news release added that members "do establish a savings account to begin their relationship with the credit union, and are then eligible to apply for any additional products and services."
