SAN DIEGO — North Island Credit Union has broken ground on its new "green" six-story, 130,000-square-foot headquarters building in Kearny Mesa.
Slated to officially open in late 2008, the building was designed by San Diego-based H2A Architects to incorporate many "island-inspired" elements as well as an array of environmentally friendly features.
Efforts have been made in all aspects of the design and construction to make the building as "green" as possible, including the use of recycled water for irrigation, recycled materials, renewable materials (such as bamboo flooring) and recycling of construction debris.

Upon completion, the project will seek the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
To be constructed by Swinerton Builders, the new building will sit on an "Island" landscape consisting of palms and other tropical plants. A large plaza fronting the building will feature concrete seeded with a light green aggregate of various sizes to depict the breaking surf.
Heavy stone massing and light transparent glass reflect the two divergent cultures that exist at North Island to become a cohesive whole–the stone element represents the solid financial institution that everyone expects and knows; and the glass element represents the openness and casual community at North Island CU.
A two-story lobby will welcome members to The Island complete with a large wooden structure reminiscent of a palm frond umbrella.
Throughout the interior will embrace the Island theme with everything from paint colors, carpet and flooring, to paneling all abstract representations of colors and textures found in island architecture.
Additional amenities will include: a community conference center, health club, caf?(C)/lunchroom with outdoor seating, library/reading room, training center, quiet relaxation room complete with Zen garden, and small informal meeting spaces distributed on each floor to encourage discussion among North Island staffers.
"We are extremely proud of what North Island and its building team have achieved with the design of this new headquarters building," said Michael Maslak, president/CEO of North Island CU. "We are using locally found and readily available renewable materials to create an energy efficient and environmentally friendly building that will simultaneously provide a comfortable corporate home to hundreds of our employees and will project the credit union's 'Island' image to more than 200,000 people who daily transverse the Highway 52 and Interstate 805 corridors."
