HARRISBURG, Pa. — Roughly 25,000 Pennsylvania government employees deemed “nonessential” went back to work today after lawmakers and the commonwealth's governor reached an agreement on the budget.
The two sides of government reached the budget deal late on Monday night, according to news reports. The deal was widely hailed as one which gave each side something of what it had wanted.
The $2.4 billion Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union had put policies into place to help its members impacted by the State's budgetary furlough, which, in the end, only lasted one day. The credit union had announced the measures, which included such things as returning the fees for checks returned for insufficient funds and advancing loan payment dates, to its membership last week. As of the beginning of the furlough about 700 members had contacted the credit union about the new policies, a spokesman said.
