ATLANTA — The Georgia Department of Banking and Finance announced last week the death of former Commissioner David Sorrell from an apparent heart attack July 1.
Sorrell served as acting commissioner from January 2002 then commissioner from June 2003 through his retirement on Dec. 1, 2005. Sorrell was born in 1951.
He had served in various positions in the department, starting with examiner in 1974. Prior to that he worked from 1973 to 1974 in credit analysis and loan review with the Bank of North Carolina, N.A., Jacksonville, N.C.

Sorrell also served on the board of NASCUS at one time as well as the Conference of State Bank Supervisors. "NASCUS is saddened by the news of David's passing," NASCUS President and CEO Mary Martha Fortney said. "Sorrell made significant contributions to NASCUS and the credit union dual chartering system."
After his retirement, Sorrell maintained an active role in the banking industry, serving as a bank and holding company director, a consultant and on the Bank Advisory Board for CSBS.
