COLUMBIA, S.C. — Credit unions have begun to reach out the families of the nine Charleston South Carolina fire fighters who were killed on June 19 while fighting a fire in a furniture store.
The nine ranged in age from 27 to 56.
The collection of funds is being coordinated through the National Credit Union Foundation's Web site (www.cuaid.coop) and being collected by the South Carolina Firefighters Federal Credit Union.

The SC Firefighters FCU is just over one year old. None of the fallen firefighters were among its members, according to CEO Bill Kennedy.
Donations can be made to two funds, one which will help defray the costs of a large unified memorial service for the nine and one which will help the firefighters' families. Kennedy emphasized that SC Firefighters FCU was merely helping to collect the funds and that they would be administered by the Charleston South Carolina Firefighters Fund.
