NEW ORLEANS — NCUA's Outreach Task Force has gained a lot of insight from the credit union community as the town halls continue, NCUA Board Member Gigi Hyland said.
At the third and most recent town hall held in New Orleans, Hyland stated, "With the third town hall meeting being completed, the Outreach Task Force is becoming well equipped with excellent information gained firsthand from the credit union community." However, she assured that no decisions have been made so all input is still welcome.
At the meetings, attendees are placed at tables to discuss different issues like NCUA programs and processes to encourage outreach and data collection on member income. Then the groups share their findings with all of the participants for further discussion. "The format of these meetings is ideal for the attendees to share their voice about these important issues and allows NCUA to listen attentively and apply what the agency is hearing," Hyland commented. "As we conclude with the final three meetings, the Task Force will certainly have quality input to apply to our deliberations."

The Outreach Task Force was created to consider staff recommendations from NCUA's Member Service Assessment Pilot Program issued in November 2006. The next Outreach Task Force Town Hall is scheduled for July 16 in Los Angeles.
The June 6 town hall in New Orleans was held in conjunction with the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions' Annual Conference on Serving the Underserved, which she also addressed.
Hyland praised the work of the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions during its 33rd Annual Conference on Serving the Underserved while stressing that credit unions exist to serve all their members.
"I think that credit unions are chartered to do one thing very well–serve your members. Regardless of your charter type or whether you have a 'low-income' designation, or whether you are a CDCU, your goal is to serve your members. If you believe in credit unions, then you have to believe in the members," Hyland, chair of NCUA's Outreach Task Force, said. She also provided an update on the task force's efforts; a town hall was held in conjunction with the Federation's meeting.
Hyland also noted the Federation's work with CDCUs to reach out to low-income communities that are often ignored by the banks and scavenged by predatory lenders.
She also highlighted areas that need immediate attention ranging from the current economic climate to regulatory and examination modernization to renewing commitment in credit unions' cooperative spirit and to the members.
While in New Orleans, Hyland also met with a number of small credit unions and their boards and staff.
