GREENSBORO, N.C. — In support of the credit union industry's initiative to help fund construction of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial in Washington, First Carolina Corporate Credit Union has made a $10,000 donation to the project.

Authorized by Congress and President Clinton in 1998, the memorial will be located on a four-acre site along the Tidal Basin, on a direct line between the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. It will be designed to evoke "the memory and spiritual presence" of Dr. King, according to the memorial's Web site (www.mlkmemorial.org).

"This is an opportunity for credit unions to take part in building a special monument recognizing a great leader," said James McDaniel Sr., board chairman of First Carolina and president/CEO of Heritage Trust FCU. "Dr. King was known for his passion and courage, and his significant contributions have had a lasting impact on our country. First Carolina is honored to donate to a memorial in his honor."
