Downey Federal Credit Union, Downey, Calif., and Golden Star Technology, Brea, Calif., donated two scanners to the library at Griffiths Middle School to benefit students. Stephen Monteros, general manager of GST facilitated the donation.
Mid-Cities Schools Credit Union, Compton, Calif., recently contributed 83 new books and a literacy-themed art print to the new library at Kentwood Elementary School in Westchester, California. The donation was part of MCSCU's community involvement program. MCSCU has a special interest in supporting reading skills, not just for children but also for adults, according to the school-based CU.
Oklahoma City Area Credit Unions, Oklahoma City, recently donated $127,900 to the Oklahoma City chapter of Children's Miracle Network. Area credit unions host a variety of fundraisers each year in order to raise donations and awareness for Children's Miracle Network and the more than 17 million children treated each year at Children's Miracle Network hospitals. The Oklahoma committee was first formed in 1998 and has made $161,740 in the past nine years.

T&C Federal Credit Union, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., raised nearly $24,000 for OLHSA's 17th Annual Walk For Warmth. Money was raised by T&C staff through selling stuffed bears, donations and gifts-in-kind. A group of 70 T&C employees, family members, and friends volunteered their time to walk and/or assist with the event totaling 217.75 volunteer hours. A Kiddie Court area with face painting, balloon animals, clowns, and games was also hosted by T&C. All of the proceeds went toward helping heat the homes of families in need throughout Oakland County.
Southland Credit Union, Los Alamitos, Calif., partnered with the American Red Cross Blood Bank to host a blood mobile drive at two of its branch locations recently. The blood drives were open to credit union associates, members and local businesses and residents as part of the ongoing community involvement efforts coordinated by the Marketing/Community Service Department of Southland Credit Union. A total of 41 units of blood were donated, enough to save the lives of up to 123 victims of accidents or illness.
Service Credit Union, Portsmouth, N.H., kicked off its fundraising of the New Hampshire chapters of the Air Force Sergeants Association and the Air Force Association with a $5,000 donation. The organizations plan to build a memorial to honor all New Hampshire men and women who have served in the United States Air Force. Service CU has promised to match all funds raised for the monument up to $20,000.
Afena Federal Credit Union, Marion, Ind., recently started a Paper and Plastic Bag recycling program. The recycled bags will be given to a local shop, RESCUED TREASURES, which is known for popular "Bag Sales". The store often doesn't have enough paper bags or plastic sacks for consumers to fill for a $5 price tag. A collection box for the bags has been set up in the lobby of the CU's Bradner Avenue Branch.
Synergy One Federal Credit Union, Manassas, Va., recently celebrated its employees at the America's Walk for Diabetes Awards Ceremony. Among the top winners that night was the Heltzel-Synergy One Mortgage Company CEO Rob Heltzel, who raised more than $20,000 single-handedly for the cause.
Keys Federal Credit Union, Key West, Fla., supported the Military Saves Week to encourage service members and their families to establish savings goals and set money aside for emergencies and other needs. Keys FCU asked military members to join Military Saves as part of Operation Financial Fitness. Military Saves provides the necessary tools to teach service men and women to save money and that alleviating debt requires dedication, sacrifice and patience. Individuals simply make the commitment to save money on a regular basis to achieve their personal financial goals. Participants receive helpful financial tips and the much-needed encouragement to continue saving.
Maine Credit Unions, Gorham, Maine, recently packed a gymnasium and raised a record-setting $21,152 for the Maine Children's Cancer Program through the 13th Annual Dr. Noel Paradise Swish-Out Childhood Cancer Challenge. The tournament field was comprised of 32, co-ed teams from organizations, businesses and families from around southern and central Maine.
Langley Federal Credit Union, Newport News, Va., recently hosted military families throughout the Hampton Roads area so they could send special Webcast messages to their deployed loved ones during Operation Best Wishes. Operation Best Wishes is a national program that sets up mobile Webcast studios at selected credit unions and gives families up to 10 minutes each to record and send special greetings. The deployed loved one can either watch the Webcase message LIVE or access the archived recording.
United Heritage Credit Union, Austin, Texas, recently completed a three month long Holiday Skip-A-Pay program which gave members the option to skip their qualified loan payment for either November or December 2006 or January 2007. The optional Skip-A-Pay loan program allowed members to donate to the United Heritage Charity Foundation which supports many local charitable organizations and projects throughout the year. Over the three month period, 2,544 Skip-A-Pay requests were approved which helped the total donation reach $25,910.
South Central Chapter of Credit Unions, Beloit, Wis., recently held its fourth annual Children's Miracle Network Bowl-a-Thon and Silent Auction fundraiser. The group raised more than $15,000 for CMN. More than half of the money was raised by the bowlers themselves as they asked friends to contribute pledges for the cause. Among other prizes given for reaching lower dollar levels, participants were given an entry to win a $500 grand prize for each $100 in pledges collected. Morgan Gorman, age 13, of Fort Atkinson won the $500 grand prize.
Pacific Service Credit Union, Fresno, Calif., was a "Big Kid" sponsor of the 20th Annual Kids Day event. More than 3,500 volunteers from six Central Valley counties sold a special $1 Kids Day edition of The Fresno Bee. Funds raised benefited Children's Hospital Central California.
Spokane Teachers Credit Union, Post Falls, Idaho, recently announced the winner of its $3,000 dream vacation drawing, part of its ongoing grand opening celebration. Carmen Allen, a member since 1986, was the lucky winner.
