AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine credit unions won high praise from the state's Governor John Baldacci, as well as from two U.S. Congressmen who spoke over the weekend at the 69th annual convention of the Maine Credit Union League.

“Maine's credit unions have a strong friend in the Governor's office, and I will do whatever I can to assist credit unions in serving their members,” said Baldacci, a Democrat.

The Maine chief executive suggested to the audience of 700 that CU staffers contact his office “anytime with an issue concerning” their industry because “what credit unions do is important and deserves support.”

Last March, Baldacci made a rare appearance on the floor of the Maine House to personally acknowledge the work of credit unions during Maine Credit Union Day.

Also praising CUs at the league meeting were U.S. Reps. Michael Michaud and Tom Allen, both of who paid tribute to CU contributions and service.
