EUGENE, Ore. — Voting online may be the key to getting more members motivated to cast their ballots, according to a tech CUSO now offering the solution to other credit unions.

Called CastMyVote.net, the configurable online voting solution was created by iTech Northwest. Its parent CU, $553 million Northwest Community Credit Union, was the first to use CastMyVote.net, for its board elections in March.

The voting solution can be used to vote for candidates, bylaws and amendments and can be hosted by iTech Northwest (www.itechnw.com) or the client credit union. Other uses could be for charter- or name-change votes, or surveys. The system allows 24/7 voting, works well for widely scattered membership and privacy can be secured in various ways, the CUSO says.

For Northwest Community's voting, members needed to enter their member IDs and the last four digits of their phone numbers as passwords, with a random confirmation code used to thwart Internet bots.

"We've already seen an increase in participation for this year's election. It only takes a few seconds; people want to use it," says Barbara Blackmore, chairman of the board for Northwest Community.
