ALEXANDRIA, Va. — New Horizons Community Credit Union, which has been operating under conservatorship of NCUA, alerted members of a potential data breach of confidential member information.
The potential breach stems from a laptop computer stolen from Protiviti, a consultant employed by Bellco Credit Union conducting due diligence to prepare a possible acquisition bid. NCUA has been looking for a merger partner for the troubled $174 million credit union after concentrations in Centrix indirect lending and other problems occurred.
The NCUA Region V Office and the Colorado Division of Financial Services were alerted April 3 of a potential data security breach involving the loan account information of approximately 9,000 of NHCCU's 19,500 members. The stolen computer contains information pertaining only to members who had loans with the credit union.

There are no indications at this time that any identity fraud, theft, or other harmful activity has occurred, according to NCUA. Additional actions have been taken to assist the affected members in obtaining free credit reports, monitoring their credit reports, and obtaining additional information through a toll-free number.
