WASHINGTON — Federal lawmakers stand ready to double the co-sponsorship of the Credit Union Regulatory Improvements Act (H.R. 1537), but it will have to wait until Congressman Paul Kanjorski (D-Pa.) returns to work.
More than a dozen legislators are on a list to become official co-sponsors of CURIA. While CUNA was not willing to name any names–for fear of retribution from the bankers–the group did say it was expecting a total of 25 co-sponsors at this point. CUNA Senior Vice President for Legislative Affairs John Magill added that he hopes to add to that figure daily.
Technically, Kanjorski, the bill's primary sponsor, has to officially sign co-sponsors to the bill, but he is out of the office right now, recovering from a scheduled triple bypass surgery. He is reportedly doing well, according to his office, and was released from the hospital last week. He is expected to return to work the week of April 16, following Congress' April recess.
