HEYSHOTT, England -- Canine Partners, a governmentally recognized charity in the United Kingdom, has begun training dogs to use ATMs on behalf of their disabled owners.
The dogs can insert and withdraw cards at the ATMs as well as collect the money and give it to the owners who, if they are in wheelchairs, may not be able to stretch far enough to reach the card or dispensing slots. The dogs cannot enter the Personal Identification Number, but the owner can often move the wheelchair sideways to the machine to do that or, increasingly, will be able to speak the number.
Since 1991 the charity has placed 140 dogs with disabled owners and has made the ATM training part of its core canine curriculum.
