GREENSBORO, N.C. — Helping out sick kids at the Victory Junction Gang Camp in Randleman for more than four years has been a heartfelt project of North and South Carolina credit unions, but in late 2005, it was decided to also spotlight other worthy ventures like community grants for small-town projects.

"We're still doing the micro-grants and that program is going well but we've also learned that credit unions found Victory Junction such a worthy recipient of donations we wanted to stay connected," explained John Slack, executive director of the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation.

CCUF, supported by CUs in the North and South Carolina Credit Union Leagues, has been serving as the fundraising vehicle for both the so called Micro-Grant program launched in 2005 and Victory Junction, the facility run by the Petty family of NASCAR fame to make life more enjoyable for chronically ill youngsters from Virginia and across the South.

As part of its giving to Victory Junction, CCUF said it will be holding a special "Credit Union Week" this July sponsored by CCUF in which participating CUs will help defray expenses of the youngsters suffering from spina bifida disease. An estimated 80 to 120 youngsters will be spending time at the camp, said Slack. "Credit Union Week" is slated for July 7-11 with CUs deciding their own charity projects, which over the years have ranged from bake sales and auctions to "jeans days" and vehicle giveaways. Separately, CCUF said CUNA Mutual would be diverting proceeds from its annual Carolinas Cup Golf Championship, March 11-13 at the Pinehurst Resort, to Victory Junction. Organizers are projecting $45,000 will be raised. Since 2004 CCUF has been a major corporate sponsor of Victory Junction, raising $1.6 million to build two cabins, a spiritual center and a tram on the Randleman property. Many CU executives from CUs in both states have volunteered countless hours at Victory Junction helping out in the food line or assisting the medical staff.

Victory Junction, a refuge for chronically ill youngsters, was founded by NASCAR's Kyle Petty and his wife, Pattie, to honor their late son, Adam, killed in a racing accident.

Kyle Petty, a racecar luminary, is expected to play in the Pinehurst golf benefit with more of the Petty family including his father, Richard, during "Credit Union Week" in Randleman.

"Credit Union Week is about helping Victory Junction Gang Camp in its mission to allow children with serious illnesses the chance to have a fun week and just be kids," said Slack. "As one camper put it, 'I brought my medication, but left my disease at home.' Credit unions are proud to continue our association with this terrific agency." –[email protected]
