PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — Service Credit Union continues to do its part to support American troops around the globe.

The credit union was the first to participate in the Armed Forces Financial Network's matching process in 2004 with a donation to the Landstuhl Fisher House, a "home away from home" for families and patients receiving medical care at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Landstuhl, Germany. At the conclusion of 2006, the credit union's donations had doubled to $3,000 since that first year, and several other significant contributions had been made to the service members in other areas.

"Service Credit Union was very pleased to continue its relationship with AFFN as a strong supporter of the Fisher House and their mission, which is very essential to the well being of our troops," Service Credit Union Senior Vice-President of Overseas Operations Richard E. Tolle said.

Carrying on a 50-year tradition of contributing to the troops, in 2006, contributions were made by individual branch managers representing 15 branches on installations in Germany to various organizations upon request. Recipients included the 435th Services Squadron, memorial funds, and Army Community Service offices. Over the winter holidays, donations were made to various Chaplains offices, assisting military families by providing commissary vouchers to provide meals for holiday celebrations.

Similarly, in New Hampshire, a donation was made to the Family Services Coordinator at the Air National Guard at Pease Air Force Base. In an effort to give these families the fun of holiday shopping, Service Credit Union gave Wal-Mart gift certificates to every family in the program.

The credit union also supported Operation Thank You for a family day full of music and activities, sponsored a Beach Boys concert at Ramstein Air Force Base, and added an additional manager of financial literacy in the United States last year.

"We have deepened our core commitment to financial literacy and doubled our resources to bring the best financial tools and information to our military members overseas and stateside," Service President/CEO Gordon Simmons said. "We are beginning 2007 with plans to participate in Military Saves week in February and will bring Credit Union Youth week to our military members in April." –[email protected]
