SPOKANE, Wash. — Numerica Credit Union along with Trace Security and NBC's TODAY show are doing their part to help consumers fight back against the growing threat of identity theft.

The joint effort resulted in two news segments designed to help better educate consumers about identity theft.

By the end of the feature consumers will know what to look for in correspondence to ensure it is authentic; learn tips on how to avoid phishing, vishing and other ID theft scams; and be aware that no legitimate business would ask for vital information over the phone or via e-mail.

To demonstrate just how ID theft can occur, using a controlled test group, Trace Security sent out a letter, similar to those that a scammer would send, and made phone calls from a secret location in an attempt to gain personal information from this test group.

The segments, slated to air February 13 and 14, will include interviews with Numerica Assistant Vice President of Online Security Kelley Ferguson and those who fell for the tested scam.
