LATHAM, N.Y. — The New York State Credit Union League recently hosted a "Credit Unions 101″ informational breakfast for the state's freshmen lawmakers at the Fort Orange Club in Albany.

The bi-annual event provides an opportunity for League staffers to meet newly elected legislators and staff while educating attendees about the credit union difference.

During the breakfast, members and/or their staff representatives heard about the not-for-profit nature of credit unions, the credit union movement in New York and the League's 2007 legislative agenda. Attendees were given a packet of credit union reference material that legislative staff can refer to as they outline their positions on legislation that could impact New York State credit unions. Packets were also personally delivered to new lawmakers unable to attend.

"With a newly elected governor and lieutenant governor, and the newest slate of Assembly members and senators in Albany, it's important to establish relationships with these leaders and communicate our message to them early and often during their term of office," said League President/CEO William J. Mellin.

One of the League's high-priority issues for this legislative session is municipal deposits and plans are underway to continue to build a coalition of interested municipal depositors to advance municipal depository choice legislation in 2007.

Under current state law, funds from municipalities can only be deposited in commercial banks. Consequently, credit unions are unable to accept deposits from municipalities such as villages, schools, libraries and volunteer fire departments.
