WASHINGTON — For the most part, the events and meeting surrounding the swearing in ceremony of the 110th Congress were namely focused on simply getting your face in front of the returning and new members of Congress.
"I would say it was a lot of meet and greets," NAFCU Director of Political Affairs Dillon Shea observed of his day on Capitol Hill Jan. 4 and even starting the night before.
The visits by NAFCU's lobbying staff and a handful of board members hit the jackpot in a meeting with Congressman Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) that lasted more than half-an-hour. "We discussed the conversion issue. At this point, he knows where we stand and we know where he stands. While we don't see eye-to-eye on everything, we have a good working relationship," Shea said. He added that the Lafayette Federal Credit Union conversion to a mutual saving bank did not specifically come up.

McHenry gained notoriety when he introduced legislation to rein in NCUA's authority in the conversion process.
NAFCU also introduced themselves to newcomers like Democrats Peter Welch (Vt.), who replaced now Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), and Michael Arcuri (N.Y.).
All in all, NAFCU met with more than 20 representatives in the first week of the 110th Congress. –[email protected]
