DEARBORN, Mich. — With its legal fight with the $1.7 billion DFCU Financial currently still bogged down, DFCU Owners United has fielded a slate of candidates for the credit union's next board elections.

According to the organization, petitions supporting the five men and one woman were submitted to the CU by the Nov. 30 deadline. If the slate is accepted for the balloting, a total of nine candidates (three incumbents and six challengers) will compete for three seats.

The three incumbent members who are running to hold onto their seats have all been on the board and/or supervisory committee for some time. The seven challengers include Linda Malec, a former 20-year member of the board, along with a design engineer, mid-level company executive, and three mid-level financial executives and/or analysts.

DFCU has not yet said whether the challengers will be included on the ballot. According to the CU's fourth quarter newsletter, candidates for board positions have to have gathered at least 500 signatures from members on petitions supporting their candidacy. The election has been scheduled for Feb. 15, 2007.

Margaret Blohm, an organizer with DFCU Owners United, said the group had put forward as many candidates as it had because it had been unsure whether the CU would do anything to disqualify any of the candidates.

She also added that six of the seven people who had been interested in running for the board initially had no trouble gathering the signatures they needed to get on the ballot.
