Looking back six years ago finds a number of pro-credit union candidates winning their races.

"The great advantage for the credit union community has always been that both Republicans and Democrats have given credit unions equal support," NAFCU President/CEO Fred Becker commented following the elections. "If you look at the history of H.R. 1151, for example, we received about as strong bipartisan support that is possible for any issue before Congress."

CUNA President/CEO Dan Mica added, "The most important message for the credit union movement, for the leagues and for CUNA, is that this division between the country needs to be taken very seriously as we move forward into the next year. We need to be extra careful to be seen, not as Democrats, not as Republicans, but as Americans who are concerned with the credit union movement and Americans who are concerned with consumers." Mica continued, "We need to make absolutely certain that as we move on Capitol Hill with our sister trade associations that we keep a bipartisan nature and reflect a bipartisan approach to anything we do, which means making sure that we have good strong support in both parties on the Hill for any moves we intend to make and not being seen as siding with one or the other…It doesn't matter which side, if we're seen on the other side, we're going to be on the outside."
