SAN ANTONIO and CARMEL, Ind. — For its work in helping feed hungry children and families, Security Service Federal Credit Union has received the Excellence in Philanthropy award from Baker Hill, an Experian company.
In its third year, the award recognizes the dedication and commitment that Baker Hill's clients demonstrate in serving their local communities through ongoing support of charitable organizations. For the past four years, the $3.8 billion Security Service FCU has supported the San Antonio Food Bank, which provides more than 27 million pounds of food annually to helping hungry families get an ample supply of nutritious food. As part of the award, the Mark & Karen Hill Foundation will make a $10,000 donation to the nonprofit organization.
"The San Antonio Food Bank is one of the best charities our organization has ever partnered with. It is a great organization that truly helps make a difference in the fight against hunger," said David Reynolds, president/CEO of the credit union. "Security Service strives to be the best corporate citizen that it can be in the communities where we live and operate."

Statistics show that Texas has the fourth highest rate of actual hunger and the worst record in the nation for children participating in the free United States Department of Agriculture's Summer Feeding Program, Baker Hill said. Additionally, one out of every four children and one out every five adults in Texas lives in poverty and has difficulty meeting basic nutritional needs.
Each year, Security Service said its contribution to the food bank helps raise more than one million pounds of food that is used to feed thousands of poor and hungry families in 16 South Texas counties. The credit union's employees also contribute more than 1,000 man-hours helping to sort and crate over 32 tons of food at the food bank's warehouse.
"Funding for domestic nutrition programs has been slashed, yet the needs of children, the working poor and seniors are escalating," said Eric Cooper, executive director of the San Antonio Food Bank. "I'm very proud of our partnership with Security Service. The credit union's donations of food, time and money have made an extraordinary impact in our community."
Finalists for the award were identified from 26 applications received from Baker Hill's clients. With Security Service, the other two finalists included Arvest Bank Group, headquartered in Bentonville, Ark. and River City Bank of Sacramento, Calif. The selection committee considered two factors–the applicant client's involvement with the nonprofit organization, and the nominated nonprofit's impact on the community it serves, Baker Hill said. –[email protected]
