SHREWSBURY, N.J. — There is a clear trend of the big getting bigger in the credit union industry.

A wave of consolidation has swept over the industry that is seeing more and more small and mid-sized credit unions being absorbed into larger CUs. The average asset size has increased from $50 million in 2001 to over $81 million in 2006. In order to make the top 100 credit unions by assets these days a credit union has to have a billion dollars in assets. In fact, as the listing below shows, there are now 111 credit unions with over a billion dollars.
