LEDYARD, Conn. — Mutual savings bank conversions and mergers will be getting a high level of attention by top credit union brass slated to speak here in a debate at the annual fall conference of CUES New England Council Oct. 1-2.

Topic for the debate: "The Undeclared War: CU To Bank Charter Conversions." A second session is slated to discuss mergers and consolidations.

Among speakers for the event being held at the Foxwoods Resort & Casino is Bucky Sebastian, president/CEO of GTE FCU in Tampa, Fla. and chairman of National Center of Member Trust who supports the CU charter. He will be joined by Alan Theriault, a Portland, Maine CU consultant and advocate for CU charter choice discussing MSB merits.

Also slated as speakers during the two-day meeting are Fred Becker, president/CEO of NAFCU; Tom C. Davis, NACUSO chairman and a Denver CU consultant, and David Hilton, president of Hilton and Associates, a Woodlands, Texas personnel and recruiting firm. Also invited as participants are corporate CU executives.

An invitation put out earlier this month by the council also noted that the debate would focus on "the merits and motivation of credit unions converting." A second session would zero in on mergers, asking "Are credit union mergers really creating member value?"

Two other questions on mergers: "Does it vary between mutual person credit unions and the corporate credit union environment? What role does CEO succession play in merger trends?"
