WASHINGTON – The Credit Union Legislative Action Council, CUNA's political arm, and NAFCU/PAC each peppered lawmakers in Washington with thousands of dollars in contributions.
CULAC made $5,000 contributions to Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) as well as Congressmen John Spratt (D-S.C.) and David Scott (D-Ga.), Federal Election Commission reports show. It is also getting equally involved in the races of some newcomers like California State Assemblyman Kevin McCarthy (R) who is running for the seat of the retiring House Ways and Mean Committee Chairman Bill Thomas (R) and others. CULAC also sent $5,000 to a couple of the leadership political action committees in June, including Back America's Conservatives and the Committee for the Preservation of Capitalism. For the month, CULAC took in more than $220,000, but spent over $267,000. At the end of June, the PAC still had more than half-a-million dollars on hand, according to the FEC. The Center for Responsive Politics stated that CULAC has taken in $2.7 million in receipts for this election cycle so far and given about $1.6 million to candidates. The Democrats have received 43% of those funds while the Republicans have gotten 57%. NAFCU's split between the parties is nearly the same with 58% to Republicans and 42% to Democrats, according to the CRP. NAFCU/PAC's FEC filings, which are done quarterly as opposed to monthly like CULAC's, show $2,000 contributions going to Congressman Jim McCrery (R-La.), Tom Feeney (R-Fla.), and Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.). NAFCU/PAC also gave $2,500 to the Roy B Fund for House Majority Whip Roy Blunt (R-Mo.).
The PAC has $291,000 in receipts for the 2005-2006 election cycle, CRP reported.
