EVERETT, Wash. – The $31 million SnoCope FCU, in cooperation with co-sponsors from the local business community and police, held a "free shred day" to highlight the dangers of identity theft and the importance of safely disposing of papers which could be used by thieves.
"It is estimated that over 500,000 people will become a victim of identity theft this year and the number is growing every day. By offering this free shred day event we can assist our members in keeping their personal information from getting into the wrong hands," said Steven Ellis, CEO of SnoCope FCU. "If we stopped just one person from getting their identity stolen, the event was a success."
Everyone that stopped by that day was given information about what is going on in the local area from an Everett Police Officer along with some tips on what to do if they become a victim. All kids that stopped by were given a kids' ID kit with their current fingerprints and a picture taken on the spot.

Ruby Findley, spokeswoman for the CU, said the CU had not kept records of how many pages or pounds of paper were shredded during the four-hour event, but said that people came in waves to take advantage of the opportunity to get rid of sometimes boxes of old papers.
