WASHINGTON – No matter how Congress slices it, credit unions can only benefit from any reform on lobbying practices, CUNA President and CEO Dan Mica said.

CUNA's take on lobbying reform was much the same as it was on campaign finance reform. "Almost anything they change, with few exceptions, it can do nothing but help credit unions," he stated.

Mica continued, "We are the poster child, the benchmark, for how a good PAC operation, i.e. fundraising operation, should be run." He did admit that the nitpicky things, like filing new and additional paperwork might cause some headaches for CUNA.

When asked whether reform was necessary, Mica immediately responded, "Yes. There's definitely a need for lobbying reform." He added with a grin, "I say with the greatest respect for my former colleagues, 10-20-30 of them get caught and one lobbyist gets caught and they change the rule to affect 24,000 lobbyists."
