WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – With a multi-year sponsorship, Truliant Federal Credit Union has joined forces with the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust Poor & Needy Division and The Winston-Salem Foundation to help Community Outreach Services YMCA kickoff a new Hispanic Family Mentoring Project.
Slated to be implemented at selected sites within the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system, the project is designed to serve Hispanic Latino families by providing training and mentoring with their cultural transition to the educational system of the United States. The goal is to increase parent participation in the educational system so that students succeed academically and view graduating from high school as something attainable.
Using a nationally recognized curriculum established by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund that is taught in Spanish, participating parents are introduced to teacher conferences, parent-teacher associations and parent's rights and structure. Parents will then be matched with volunteer mentors who will check in with the families and provide ongoing training and support.
