BETHESDA, Md. – The largest credit union in New Jersey and one of the smallest in Washington, D.C. have something in common – they both announced that they had joined up with the Allpoint network. Allpoint, a subsidiary of Cardtronics, the nation's largest independent ATM deployer, provides surcharge-free ATM access to cardholders but charges participating institutions a monthly fee based on the size of the enrolled card base. The $1.3 billion Affinity FCU, signed up with Allpoint Network independently and without receiving the same price break the network has offered to members of the New Jersey Credit Union League as part of a negotiated deal, according to Ben Psillas, CEO of the network. The CU came on board, in part, to offer its members surcharge-free access to 905 surcharge-free ATMs, including some in Target and Costco stores as well as Hess and Sunoco gas stations. Meanwhile, in Washington, the $9 million Georgetown University Alumni And Student Credit Union, a student run credit union, announced it will bring its 6,000 members surcharge-free ATM access beginning next month through Allpoint. Allpoint CEO Ben Psillas said the move helps bring the credit union as many surcharge-free ATMs in the Washington D.C. market as many major banks have. Currently, credit union members only have surcharge-free access at two on-campus ATMs.
