WEST ALLIS, Wis. – Guardian Credit Union has teamed up with National Basketball Association's Milwaukee Bucks to teach area students the value of saving money. “The Milwaukee Bucks had never promoted financial education before and they had heard of only one other NBA team to promote this,” said Marketing Assistant Vice President Dean Lampe. “Since we were the first financial to team with the Bucks on this, we have had some exclusivity in the marketing of this program.” Featuring Milwaukee Bucks Guard Maurice “Mo” Williams, the new savings program dubbed “Mo's Making Money Matter”, allows children to open a real savings account and make weekly deposits on specially designated “savings days” at their school. The credit union has been offering its savings program for over nine years and tailors the savings program to each participating school's needs. Typically schools receive free teaching materials, marketing for the students and parents, credit union field trips, and now participation in the “Mo's Making Money Matter” program. In addition to learning the value of saving, participating students can win prizes such as being entered to win tickets to a Milwaukee Bucks game with every deposit made; receiving an autographed picture of Bucks guard Mo Williams when they open their account; and the highest-participating schools will get a visit from Mo Williams. Participating and new schools have the opportunity to compete until March 31st for one of two special visits by Mo Williams, where he will talk to students about the importance of saving money. The contest rewards students for opening accounts and for each deposit they make, regardless of the amount. Students will also have the opportunity to win tickets to the Milwaukee Bucks vs. Indiana Pacers game on April 1 as guests of Mo Williams, the Milwaukee Bucks and Guardian CU. “Our school programs, and youth credit unions have been very excited about this program,” said Lampe. “Since the beginning of February we have opened over 70 new accounts and had over 250 deposits.”
