Not likely, he said, but admitted, “It was kind of exciting” to work on the Treasury Department's recently released DVD, Identity Theft: Outsmarting the Crooks. The video is aimed at helping consumers avoid becoming victims of identity theft. It will be distributed free of charge and is also available in Spanish and an English transcript for the hearing impaired. “I think they really did a good job.If they can make me look good, it's a testament to how hard Treasury worked,” he quipped. “I was on the first panel and the discussion highlighted `what is identity theft?'” Demangone explained. Others included on the panel were representatives from the Secret Service, a Florida banking group, and Treasury. For his part, he went over the `tells,' like unexplained charges on credit cards. “How would somebody know if there were to become a victim?” CUNA Assistant General Counsel Jeff Bloch also participated on a panel with Visa and Citigroup for the DVD that was subsequently cut because of duplication. He went over preventative measures consumers can take like shredding documents and checking credit reports; he pointed to CUNA's Web site (www.cuna.org) for resources. Treasury Secretary John Snow, who has been supportive of the credit union tax-exemption and will address CUNA's GAC, was expected to participate in the launching event Jan. 26, as well as representatives the Federal Trade Commission, Departments of Justice and Defense, the U.S. Secret Service, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the American Bankers Association, NAFCU, the Consumer Data Industry Association, and the Florida Bankers Association.
