COLUMBIA, Md. – In response to the "staunch" support shown by Maryland Democrat Congressman C.A. "Dutch" Ruppersberger for his support of credit unions, First Financial FCU and the Maryland & District of Columbia Credit Union Association are planning to hold an "appreciation lunch and fundraiser" for the congressman on Feb. 6. Ruppersberger was the first representative from Maryland to sign as a co-sponsor to the Credit Union Regulatory Improvements Act (CURIA). In addition, during the recent tax exemption hearing, he made his staff widely available to credit unions and the MDDCCUA in their efforts to contact him regarding the association's concerns. Lastly, wrote MDDCCUA President/CEO Mike Beall in his letter to affiliated credit unions, "The unequivocal support given by Deborah Casteel, his banking Legislative Assistant, on his behalf was as strong an endorsement as we received on our visits around the Hill." Beall continued to write that, "For these reasons and many more, we feel it is incumbent on the credit union movement in Maryland to show our appreciation for the congressman's brave stance on our behalf. This fundraiser is an excellent way to express our thanks. By personally contributing to the Congressman's reelection campaign, we demonstrate that those who help us in our times of need will be treated with equal magnanimity in their own. I ask that you all seriously consider attending this event and discussing it with your colleagues in the credit union community."
