ATLANTA – For Guy Birchfield, some things have remained the same over the 50 years he has served on Delta Community Credit Union's board of directors. Birchfield first joined the $2.6 billion CU in 1948 after serving in the Air Force in World War II and being hired by Delta Airlines as an apprentice mechanic, DCCU reported in its most recent Access newsletter. His first transaction: borrowing $25 to buy a table and chairs. Birchfield paid a small recording fee of 25 cents and paid the loan off at a rate of $2.50 per day. In 1956, the CU's vice president of maintenance asked Birchfield to join the board. "I agreed right away because by that time I was sold on the `people helping people' philosophy," Birchfield said. DCCU underwent a name change from Delta Employees CU last October. It is also building four new branches here over the next year. Birchfield recalls when the CU "was just the top drawer in a desk in accounting." "The credit union has always been conservatively managed. I don't want that to change, and I never want to lose our friendliness," he said. "I do want the credit union to grow so it can continue to make an impact in members' lives."
