CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Online banking adoption rates vary widely by region and age group, according to a sweeping new survey. According to the Consumer Technographics North American Benchmark Study of 62,000 households by Forrester Research, 28% of U.S. households – and 42% of online households – are active online bankers. That number that rises to 51% of active bankers among online households in the states of Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Wyoming and Utah, which had the highest single penetration rate of 60%. The lowest penetration rate in any single state was 24% in West Virginia, followed by 25% in Mississippi. By region, the “East South Central States” of Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee had the lowest rate at 33%, the survey shows. Combining age with geography, 65% of online Generation Y’ers in the mountain states were online bankers while only 24% of online seniors in the “West North Central States” of Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and the Dakotas.
