MADISON, Wis. – The World Council of Credit Unions, in what CEO Pete Crear described as a "small way" to "repay the contributions and faith in the movement" displayed by the Louisiana Credit Union League, has offered to fund the salary of a League accountant through the end of the year as the League continues to deal with the crisis caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. "We hope that with this individual's full engagement, LCUL will be better able to pursue the larger task of restoring the League and assisting Louisiana credit unions to get back to fully serving their members," said Crear. LCUL, a longterm WOCCU supporter, has been instrumental in several initiatives, including WOCCU's Strathmore program and African Technical Congress. Staff members, including League President/CEO Anne Cochran, and volunteers have generously donated their time and funds to the international credit union system over the years, said WOCCU. WOCCU has also donated $5,000 each to the Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama leagues. It further matched staff donations made to those organizations as well as to the American Red Cross hurricane relief efforts, for a total additional donation of $2,600.
