CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Bank of America has started an innovative program which, should it spread, may become another way for credit unions to promote their debit card programs. Under the Keep the Change program, Bank of America will round up the bills paid by debit card holders and put the additional funds into a savings account. Thus, if a debit cardholder uses their debit card to pay $9.45 at a fast food restaurant, the bank will round the bill up to $10.00 and put the 55 cents into the card holders' savings account at the end of the day. Additionally, the bank will match the first three months of the program's transfers and thereafter contribute 5% per year to the accounts up to $250.00. "Our customers told us they want a simple way to save, so we created Keep the Change," said Diane Morais, a Bank of America executive. "It's like an electronic change jar. People can now turn those everyday purchases for groceries, gas and meals into a simple way to save."
